Victorians get ‘Iron-man’ treatment

The Naxxar Victorians squad faced the challenging figure of athlete, Fabio Spiteri yesterday evening. The four-times Ironman finisher was brought into this week’s training session to help the team overcome the fitness problem which we encountered during our last friendly against Gharghur Bushwackers.  

​According to Spiteri, who is a full-time athlete and coach, ‘only one third of the team could be considered fit enough’ to endure as much as the high level of athleticism  needed for the game. He stressed that the rest must work hard to catch up with the level required.

Spiteri comes from an athletic background, but he has switched to triathlons some time ago because of injuries. He is the fastest Maltese Ironman to date and his career celebrates a number of milestones:

6 consecutive years national champion 800m (running) – 1998 – 2003
4 consecutive years and counting fastest Maltese Ironman (2010 – 2013)
5 times National Duathlon Champion 1998 – 2008 – 2009 – 2011 – 2013
4 times Ironman Finisher
2008 4th place in African triathlon championships in Tunsia
2008 11th place in ITU small nation games in Luxembourg
2010 Abu Dhabi sprint triathlon 2nd place 
2011 Cyprus triathlon for small states of europe 9th place
2011 Cyprus K1MAN half ironman distance 4th place
2013 European Triathlon Championships in Turkey – 8th place age group 35 – 39
2013 Malta Triatlete of the year
2014 Abu Dhabi international triathlon – 8th overall , 2nd agegroup
